Rights and development in Mauritius - A Reader
Sheila Bunwaree & Roukaya Kasenally
This reader interrogates the Mauritian model of development from various perspectives and pleads for the weaving of a rights culture / perspective within any new development paradigm that may be adopted. The Mauritian state cannot afford to be a minimalist state; every stakeholder has a role to play to ensure that the people of Mauritius are not treated as mere subjects but rather as full fledged citizens who have both rights and responsibilities. Various key themes/issues such as work, education, language, the displaced people of Chagos, information technology and the making of an intelligent island are discussed within this reader. In short, it makes essential reading for anyone interested in contemporary Mauritius.
